very, very, very low...if you need something that alters you mental state of being to feel better, then you've got a problem.

In terms of using it as a self medication to honestly help yourself, I have no problem with it. In terms of using it as a recreational tool to just get high, I have a problem with it.

Everyone does it for a different reason. I have several friends who smoke, and I used to smoke it myself. It has its good and bad points.

Good points:
1. motivation for things like mowing the lawn etc...
2. Relaxes a temper
3. Can prevent people with much worse substance abuse problems from doing those other, heavier drugs.
4. Makes things more interesting, like movies, songs etc...
5. I'm sure other people have other reasons of their own.

Bad points:
1. Can become a vise and be expensive
2. illegal
3. paranoia
4. can have the opposite effect from number 1 in the good points section above
5. Guilt, especially with your kids, which leads to 6.
6. Bad influence on your children
7. Bad for your health.
8. decreases concentration and motor skills
9. I'm sure other people have other reasons of their own.

With these few of many reasons stated for both the good and the bad points, my energy level has increased drastically after I quit smoking. I can think better, and I tend to get more things done. I'm more aggressive with things I need to be aggressive with, and I finish more things that I start. It's easier to wake up in the morning, but it's harder to find motivation for things I don't want to do.

In a balance between smoking and drinking alcohol, I'd rather smoke. Drinking has had a much worse effect on my life and many others I know. Several of my friends have died from alcohol, none of them have died from pot.

It's interesting that alcohol is legal and pot is not. But that's a different topic.

...and of course, pot is not the answer. Neither is any other drug. One should find hobbies or other things to make them happy.

I also disagree with cigerettes, wtf is the point?

I don't smoke, but I also don't have any prejudices about smoking pot or people who smoke pot. I only know of one friend who became the stereotype of the "unmotivated pot-head"; the majority of pot smokers I know aren't anything like this stereotype. If it's your thing, it's your thing.

The history of its bad press comes from around the Prohibition Era, when people were turning to weed more and more for recreational highs after the alcohol became illegal. Since weed was often more associated at the time with "colored people" (mostly African Americans and Mexicans), racial politics and paranoia demonized marijuana; it was a popular fear at the time that lustful "negros" were taken to using marijuana to intoxicate and seduce unwary white women, which was a similar racist paranoia used to sensationalize and eventually criminalize other drugs such as cocaine (also linked to African American laborers) and opium (linked to Chinese immigrants).

The health risks (which, let's face it, aren't any worse than regular cigarettes) and its bad reputation, when added together, don't really seem to warrant the draconian drug enforcement tactics currently in use to prohibit its sale and use. Other narcotics are far more dangerous and deadly, and (as pointed out already) alcohol, a legal intoxicant, is even more dangerous and causes more strife and deaths than marijuana.

Legalize it, then have the government keep a tight on its growth and distribution, like they already do with alcohol and tobacco. Hell, a marijuana tax might just help take a chunk out of the U.S. federal deficit...

And those are my feelings on weed.

Here's my two cents on this issue, and I'd like to mention a few facts that have already been mentioned on this particular plant that is capable of growing anywhere, save for the artic regions, and was more commonly used as an industry product to produce rope, paper (the original print of the Declaration of Independance was writen on hemp paper) and even clothing. Now as Johnny mentioned, marijuana was being used as a recreational drug by minorities which was one of the striking points used to demonize the plant which in turn was a part of a bigger plan enacted by a wealthy millionare by the name of William Randolph Hearst who veheminately oppsed the use of marijuana in not only as a form of recreation but in industry as well and here's why. Hearst invested a lot of money in newspaper companies and paper mills to provide the newspapers. It was how he made his millions. Somewhere in the Twenties, a person had developed a method of mass producing paper through using hemp and had this become the acceppted means, Hearst would have lost millions as his paper mills would shut down, hence his smear campaign. Now jump forward to the Sixties. Dope use in the period would skyrocket out of the establishment of the counterculture movement, protests against U.S. involvement in Vietnam and the apperance of the more psychosomatic drugs, thus reenforcing the concept that marijuana is a 'gateway drug'. After the Eighties, the failed attack on Bill Clinton's use of marijuana and the further appearance of the drug in modern media, marijuana has become what I'd like to call a 'Backburner' drug that even though it's still illeagal, many feel that it doesn't harbor any threat to the nation and that the scientific study of its use as medicine might actually benifit mankind, thus many marijuana busts at a local or county level in rural areas only produces misdominor charges against the perpertator. There is more I'd like to say but a lack of research prevent me from doing so, but this should suffice

i found a pretty interesting article about weed and how it might stimulate the economy to legalize it.

Right now there is a successful stock broker named Irv Rosenfeld who has the governments permission to smoke weed! He and six others (known as the Fortunate Seven) are the lone participants in the FDA's Investigational New Drug (IND) program.

Ever since 1983, Rosenfeld has received a monthly shipment of marijuana amounting to about 300 joints from the US government's Mississippi marijuana farm. That adds up to more than 3,000 ounces smoked over the decades. The weed helps alleviate the pain from a rare bone disorder Rosenfeld suffers from called multiple congenital cartilaginous exostoses, which is marked by bony protrusions in the body's long bones.

Go ahead, look it up. I ain't shittin' ya.

I can't help but read this and instantly think of the sleezy 80's businessman character from the "Future Stock" episode of Futurama. Him and his deadly bone-itis.

"I was so busy being an 80's guy, I forgot to cure it!"
*snap crack*
"My only regret... is that I have... bone-itis."
