i guess i hit a hot spot with this thread

um like i stated in a earlier post here i said i liked leviathans, and hydras

the hydra is one of my more favorite next to were creatures because of the fact that there is hardly any information on them. one reason is thought to be because they hate populated areas and love to live in caves now the only known information is that they have up to 8 heads and there kind of like a lizard in the fact that they can regenerate any limb lost.

i just thought of another creature that dose not get enough credit are the hell hounds

Are you refering to Cerberus or the numerous sightings of Black Dogs such as Auld Shuck? Curious

Would creatures like Ifrit or bahamut count as mystical creatures? Kinda like the creatures they use in the final fantasy series.

No, no they wouldn't count. As they arn't really mythical creatures just creatures from a game, and i truly don't count them as mythical creatures.

Actually, peter_wolf, Ifrits would. They are "Earth Spirits" of middle-eastern / arabian lore. The same way Djinns, Genies, and Marids would.

Yeah, Ifrit are a type of Arabic djinn mentioned in the Koran, and Bahamut is also of Arabic origins... it's the giant fish upon which the earth sits. Oddly enough, this sort of reminds me of a Native American creation legend about a giant turtle rising from the waters to support the other animals who needed land to live on... in fact, "Turtle Island" is a common name used by Native Americans to refer to the continent of North America (both tied to the story of the land being supported by a giant turtle and the fact that the continent is sort of turtle-shaped).

My avatar and I share a common interest in mythology, the paranormal and other weird subjects. However one has to be very careful about research as some sources are miss-interpreted at best, while others entirely spurious.

It is also worth noting that many animals that to modern "eyes" are commonplace just a few hundred years ago were considered "mythical"
such as giant squid/octopi. Go back even further and rhinoceros, the great apes and even whales were all once considered to be tall tales told by travellers.

Going slightly off-topic, Johnny's mention of a giant turtle (plus the Bahamut thing) made me think of Discworld, and how there, the world is held up by four elephants, all standing on the back of a giant turtle.

I think that was one of the earliest creation/what is the world myths, which inspired Terry Pratchett to create Discworld. Great stories. Laughing

Not for this thread in particular, but I've looked through an older edition of the Monster Manual before (I think it was the old AD&D edition... I remember being quite keen on the various Chromatic Dragons). I may have looked over some of the newer (3e and 4e) edtions in the bookstores, but not really studied them intensely.

A fun remake/parody of the D&D Monster Manual is the eight-volume "Hacklopedia of Beasts" for the game HackMaster (my favorite, old-school styled RPG in recent years).

Would that be the "Voodoo" creature or the "Eat your brain" type popularized by the films of George A. Romero?

A creature mentioned in a Lewis Carroll poem of the same name.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!"

The poem also mentions a Vorpal Sword too.

Sweet!

My personal definition of "mythical" creatures includes only those with definitive origins in folklore, legends, and religious mythology or scripture. Literary figures can be tough to pin down, since they may be loosely based upon older stories or completely made up.

As far as I know, Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky was not based on any mythical beast, but was rather a poem mostly built around nonsense words, and in this case would have been completely manufactured by the author. Perhaps the charm of the poem is the fact that the narrator doesn't go into any effort in defining what exactly he's talking about, he's assuming the audience knows what bandersnatches, borogoves, and vorpal swords are.

Still, if we're allowing literary and other pop culture creatures, I want to put my vote in for Displacer Beasts from the D&D games. Nasty, tricksy buggers, they are...
