Here's another question for everybody. Do you prefer to read your books in hardcopy (on a page with ink) or as an e-book (like on the Kindle)?
|
I actually prefer reading in an electronic format unless it's a hardcover. Nothing against paperbacks, I just prefer the larger hardcover versions. They also look nicer on the shelf. Fortunately though, the company that publishes most of what I'm reading nowadays, Baen, maintains a free online library. Which, of course, is perfect for me both because I like reading in that format, and because I don't always have the time (or money) to buy new books. Though I have promised myself that I will buy, eventually, every book I read in their library. If only to support the company and the service.

A free online library? wow....I'm going to look them up right now. |

I recommend reading the introduction. Not only is it rather humorous but it makes several very excellent points. |

I, like Xebulon, prefer hardcover or e-book format. I hate how much damage can be done to a paperback just by reading it once.
The exception- if someone buys me a book in paperback that is part of a series, I'll try to get the rest of the series in paperback. I usually try to get copies with covers by the same artist, as well. |

((You know, call me crazy but... um... I heard that there is this giant, legendary, building you can quest for... it's called...
...the Libarary.
Yeah, no foolin'! It has like all these shelves upon shelves of books, and magazines, and newpapsers... most now have these weird shrines that let you discover things from all over the world... many even offer these shiny, disc-sheilds you put into these disk-sheild readers, and they project moving pictures, or read a book to you...
Shoot, if you're nice to the templars and monks who work at these amazing buildings of learning, they will often let you sign out these books and disc-sheilds for a couple of weeks, letting you read them, or play them at home, at your own leisure.
And... it's all free... FREE!!!
The place is amazing i tell you! Amazing!
...yeah... that's why I'm not a comedian.
Anyhows, back on track. I don't mean to sound elietest, but... if you can't afford books, yet you like to read, just goto the library. They've got books-a-pleanty. They're a lotta fun )) |

Yeah, I'm on a first name basis with the staff of two different libraries in my area. The only problem is that they don't always have the specific books I'm looking for, and doubly so for science fiction. |

My library sucks. I'm pretty sure the last time they got a new book was back in the nineties. |

The only thing my closest library has is reference books. But, (not to sound snide) I DO go visit my hometown libraries all the time when I'm there. It's just sometimes its nice to have a permanent copy with you. And towards the online library, I'm assuming that its for copyrighted materials, thus its kinda shocking that you should be able to pull material down for free. The Library may let one borrow a book for free, but they wont let you keep it for free. |
