My most 3 favorite anime are durarara, full metal panic, and oran high school host club, basically because they're really funny and have a good storyline I strongly suggest you watch them if you haven't already! |

Haven't watched many anime myself. But of those I have watched... hmm...
1. This Ugly Yet Beautiful World
(don't even need to think about that.)
2. Spice and Wolf
3. Fate/Stay Night |

I have watched many good ones and its really a matter of what kind you wish to watch. Ask for a genre and I may give a small list. |

((Arcanus,
I wasn't really impressed with Durarara. It... seemed to disjointed, with too large a cast. And, by the time it started to twist the stories together, I found I really had lost interest in what was going on. So... to me at least, Durara didn't do the "slow-burn" well.
Anyway, were you looking for recomendations, or just naming a couple of shows you enjoy?)) |

((Well, did you want more anime-full-length-movie, anime-OVA, or anime-series?
Hrm... off the top of my head... here's three
--Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. A reboot of the Bubblegum Crisis franchise. Chicks in power-armor vs. corporate megalomaniacs.
--Vampire Princess Miyu. Either the OVA or the series. Both are dark, gothic, nihilistic, dramatic, and emotionally brutal.
--Rozen Maiden. Gothic-Loli fighting dolls trying to become Alice.
So... there you go. Some older-series ideas. )) |

To add to Caroline's list, I'll toss in
-- Trinity Blood. It's an odd little series that I suspect has more to it. It's got vampires, and vampires that feed on vampires.
-- Moon Phase. Short, sweet and funny. A boy from a long line of spiritualists ends up living with a small collection of vampires that covet his blood for its unique properties. |

((Arcanus,
Some more... esoteric titles.
--Princess 9. Series was liscenced by AD Vision. Girls playing baseball in a man-dominated sport. It's pretty cool, and has a very bold ending.
--Mahoromatic. One of the last titles brought out by Pioneer Animation / Geoneon. There are two seasons of it. One of my favorites. It's probably because of the seiyuu, but the story and pacing are solid. The characters all get their due time, and it also has a pretty bold ending.
--Magic Knight RayEarth. Liscenced by Media Blasters. CLAMP's break-out, fantasy, swords-and-sorcery anime. Two, full-length seasons.
And... iffn you want, I could also suggest some adult-bishoujo titles too. )) |

Hum... If you want 3 decent classics, here is my recommendation.
YuYuHakusho is a timeless duke'em out story of spirits, yokai, and demons that spans across five full seasons. The first three are entertaining, kinda slows on the fourth, but ends with a bang on the fifth.
Robotech: I still have yet to finish all this because of how expansive the series was, that and the lack of complete dvd sets that I could find.
Gundams: I won't go into detail and just use one word: Mecha. |

Most of the classics back then had a decent blend and did'nt rely on gimmicky art designs to make them fun to watch. Too bad its not the case now. |

I must have watched the adult swim's original version like 5 times before they finally released the ending season. |

I am sure modern anime is good (I have no time to see )
I saw a few of Hetalia, and it is a really funny look at early-mid 20th century history.
The truly great ones are like great movies, always worth to see again for first time.
Hayo Miyazai: Anything from him
Masamune Shiro: some of his are great
Gainax: their works influence on anime is immeasurable.
Rumiko Takahashi: Really Manage, but all stroeis made into anime, and she make anime popular to older crowd.
Mamoru Oiishi (??) is a fantastic director
Individual shows of note:
Patlabor
... have to think a bit here, long time |

Well Durarara is finished. I liked it but the ending was bad it left too many things unanswered, and I found out that Kekaishi wont be getting anymore new episodes, so now I am out of things to watch except bleach. *Sigh* |

((Arcanus,
What about things like High School of the Dead, Cowboy Bebop, Lucky Star, RoboTech, Azumanga Daioh, Blood+, Card Captor Sakura, Hand Maid May, Martian Successor Nandesico, and Dot Hack.
There are a ton of anime still out there. )) |

((Arcanus,
H.O.T.D. is... about a B. It's nothing great. It's fun to watch, but... nothing great. If you want a more serious horror, I'd check out Requiem From The Darkness.
If nothing else, it does hit all the needed parts to make it a zombie-sploitation movie.
--Stuff blows up... check
--Hot chicks in skimpy outfits... check
--Hot chicks with guns, swords, or serious a$$-kickery... check
--Nerdy guy who hangs out with hot chicks... check
--Zombies... check
--Hot chicks doing the hot chick thing... check
--More Zombies... check
--Space ships... check
--Barricades being over-run... check
--Stuff on Fire, and pleanty of it... check
--Hot Chicks Getting Doused in Water... check
--People commiting suicide... check
--Teenage angst... check
--Still Even More Zombies... check
--Zombies on Fire... check
--Zombies Devouring Heroes... check
--Endings that are Beginnings (in case the series sells well)... check
--Zombies Smashing Stuff... check
--Snarky Sniper Teams... check
--Zombie Police, Soldiers, Etc... check
--Lords and Ladies Protecting Their Castle... check
--Lingere Shots, And Pleanty Of Them... check
--Homages to Other Zombie Genre Stuff... check
--Backstabbing Rat Bastards... check
--Zombies Shambling About Being Zombies... check
--Children Zombies... check
And... Sentai Filmworks actually does pretty well for the translation, and voice acting. Alice sounds too old for her voice... but the others do well.
So... yeah. H.O.T.D. doesn't raise the bar on zombie movies or apocolypse movies, or anti-establishment movies, or whatever... but it is shameless fun. )) |

Well, considering that H.O.T.D. is the first actual Infection based zombie film in history, I'd say that it does'nt raise or lower the bar, though you have to admit its nice to see the humor from that fat guy. At least in a ..... freaky nerdy kind of way. |

H.O.T.D. Has been explained in the most direct manner possible. If you also want a few quick laughs, try these few:
Samurai Champloo: It has Samurai in them. What other reason do you need? Simply watching the first episode is enough to show you badassery and hilarity.
City Hunter: This has two things I've rarely seen. Compelling stories and humor injected like an addiction. Seriously, who'd ever think that Ryu Saeba happened to be a Hero whenever he isn't looking up a woman's skirt?
Samurai7: This one has Samurai AND giant Robots! You can't beat that.
Devil May Cry: Dante and his Rebellion. Nuff' said.
Ghost in the Shell: You a fan of thinking Anime's? This one sits right at home.
Gundam 00 Wing: Gundam has been mentioned before, yes. This one is by far the most battle filled one I know so far and we all enjoy a good brawl between 50 Ton war Machines.
That's all this guy shall add here. |

((Ugh... I just realized that if I actually want to watch/own the rest of season 1 of Blood+, it's like some $300 bucks... I hate OOP stuff. Stupid me and not getting it when I could. This is searching for Tenchi Muyo OVA all over again. I never did finish my Chobits collection... or X for that matter. Worse, I KNOW I had the full Vampire Princess Miyu OVA... and I'll be damned if I can find where the one DVD of it is... though I suppose I could just re-buy this one, as it's like $20.
Anyway Wolfstride,
I do have to disagree with a couple of your suggestions.
Ghost in the Shell. I've found this one to be... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much on the "oh-I-know-about-all-sorts-of-obscure-and-intelectual-crap-that-I-can-drone-on-about-for-complete-seasons", sorts of diatrabes you get from University professors that really aren't teaching you anything, but just expect you to regurgitate whatever they say as if its gospel. I got it. Machines have thoughts. Humans have thoughts. I just felt... GITS is so... pompous with its presentation of the idea. It's the same sorts of problems I have with the whole Neon Genesis Evangelion . The same sorts of themes/philosphy were presented in the Xenosaga game with the development of KOS-MOS and MOMO and done much better. So... yeah... GITS just... makes me roll my eyes. To me, a thinking woman's anime (notice the inclusion of woman... me and my smarty-pants-ness-sense-of-humor) would be something more like Milienium Actress, Perfect Blue, and Paranoia Agent .
So... I would grade GITS as a C... maybe a C+, and definately give the warning that can be as dry and dull as Tolkien at times.
Devil May Cry. I picked up this bluray to check out what all the fuss was about. And... maybe I lost a lot of something, as I never played the games, but... it just was... okay. It never really... pulled me in or anything. I never attached to the characters, the setting, Dante, anything. It had the same "watch-and-forget" sorts of feelings that Burst Angel had for me.
So... I'd give Devil May Cry a D+/C-.
Anyway, just some quick thoughts. )) |

Hmm....
I'll have to agree with what you said on GITS. The only reason I really recommend it, is because I liked the whole plot in general, so I guess I went too fan boy there.
Most people would look at DMC that way, those who haven't played the series. Sure, he's a demon hunte and that is over used. He has sexy babes to fight for him with guns and swords, even more over used. But it's mostly knowing Dante's story, why he fights, why he acts as he does that gets you. You have to play ze games in order to really enjoy Dante's Brand style of ass kickery. |

((Artyom,
Just some additional comments on H.O.T.D.
After second thought, I'd downgrade it to more of a C / C+, and not a B. It's fun... and I can exercize too it, but... it's just average. And, it has several things about it that I can't stand in serial shows.
1) Recap episodes. Episode 4 is a recap. It's bad enough when a show has a recap about 1/2 way into the season. But after three episodes? Do the writers really think I'm not following the plot? It's four episodes into the show. I think I got what's going on. Zombies are taking over the world, and survivors are trying to find out what to do. This isn't rocket science here.
2) Extras. I have the bluray of H.O.T.D. and it has minimal extras. Just some trailers to other Sentai Filmworks shows, and clean intro/credits. Nothing else. No artwork... no manga cover art... no character bios... no concept art... no english lyrics to the music. So... that's sort of disappointing. I like extras. Addmittidly, the bluray was pretty cheap to have the whole season on it, but... I dunno. The Walking Dead has its whole season on it too, and still packed in a couple of extras, like the make-up process for one of the zombies. Thinking of that, no 5.1 for the Japanese soundtrack either. 5.1 for English, but only 2.0 for Japanese. That's disappointing too, as I have other Japanese blurays that use the 5.1 without a problem. So... I know 5.1 soundtracks exist.
3) Characters for no reason. I hate it when movies and shows introduce characters only for them to die. H.O.T.D. does this almost to an extreame. In episode 2, the main character's party meets up with another band of survivors. That band dies within five minutes of meeting the heroes. Um... why bother at that point? The more jarring part of this, is that H.O.T.D. did the "meat-for-the-grinder" part correct just five minutes prior, when the Tsundere Princess and Captain Chubby are running through the school, and the Tsundere Princess says to go talk to the teachers is stupid. So... I find it... disjointed that they scripted it correctly in one scene, and, in the same episode, scripted it poorly. They could have just as easily just had that second group of survivors die in the school lot. It would have had pretty much the same effect.
4) Deus ex-machina. H.O.T.D. has several scenes of deus ex-machina. The heroes are in trouble, and are about to die... and BOOM deus ex-machina.
5) The ditzy blond. You know, I kinda like the aspect of the girl who is hot and a bit oblivious, but... is actually really smart. For example, in Lucky Star, Miyuki is pretty, ditzy, but also the smartest of the group. In H.O.T.D., the school doctor is pretty, ditzy, and... only onscreen to jiggle around a lot. So... that annoys me. All the other hot girls have personalities... the school doctor... not so much.
6) The pacing. In The Walking Dead, you start off with the survivors, and you get flashbacks to the outbreak, collapse of civilization, and restart of how life is. While you're dumped into the present, these flashbacks provide a lot of detail into the characters, their relationships with each other, and gave a believeable timeline for the collapse of civilization to occur. In H.O.T.D., it takes about... 30 minutes for the entire world to collapse. Which... is really friggin lame. H.O.T.D. could have spent about 2 - 3 episodes of just the characters in high school, letting the audience have a tease of who these people are. And, during this tease, have some students get sick... news reports of weird outbreaks of violence... quarentines... that sort of thing. Set it up that the world has no idea what's going on. The... instant apocolypse is... just... too quickly. World War Z gives a pretty solid outline of who things grew from small outbreaks to full-on plague.
Anyway, Arty, just some things to help keep your expectations of H.O.T.D. grounded. )) |
